Divisions lower hopes of G20 breakthrough
(FT) -- The world's leading nations were divided on Friday night over plans to reduce global economic imbalances, with China determined to head off international criticism over its huge foreign exchange reserves.
France had hoped to strike a deal at the weekend on economic indicators that would be used to monitor imbalances, including current account balances, real exchange rates and foreign exchange reserves.
In an urgent appeal for agreement, Nicolas Sarkozy, French president, asked G20 finance ministers and central bank governors to look beyond a "mechanistic approach". "We do not have much time," he said in Paris.
"We will not succeed in everything. But the worst-case scenario would be to refuse to address the real subject -- the international monetary order ... I hope your discussions will not get bogged down in interminable debate on these indicators."
China, however, signalled its opposition to the monitoring plan. "We think it is not appropriate to use real effective exchange rates and reserves," said Xie Xuren, Chinese finance minister.
The worst-case scenario would be to refuse to address the real subject -- the international monetary order.

While Germany supports using the suggested economic indicators for monitoring purposes, like China it opposes any specific targets.
"There is a vast majority of countries that support having these five indicators together," said Jörg Asmussen, Germany's financial state secretary.
Jim Flaherty, Canada's finance minister, said he believed there was agreement on two indicators -- the level of public debt and deficits, and the level of private savings -- but there was difficulty agreeing on the current account measure.
China wants a focus on trade figures, rather than the full current account.
In his opening speech before a working dinner in the Elysée palace, Mr Sarkozy also pushed for more regulation of the commodity markets, and an "innovative financing scheme" to help industrialised nations finance technology transfers to developing countries to deal with global warming.
He said that a "tiny levy on financial transactions" would be such an innovative scheme, appealing directly to Mr Geithner at least to consider the suggestion.

And they may never get there.
That's a good thing.
Say what you want about how insane it is for techs to be up as much as they are in a short period of time -- the Nasdaq is up almost 7% this year already, and more than 31% in the past six months. But you can't talk about tech being a bubble without taking a close look at how stupid things were at this time 11 years ago.
The Nasdaq hit an intraday peak of more than 5,132 in March 2000. It fell to a low of 1,108 by October 2002. So even though the Nasdaq is up over 150% from its nadir, it is still 45% below its summit.
"'Never' is a long time. Eventually, the Nasdaq will probably get back there, but I don't see that in the near future," said Brad Sorensen, director of market and sector research with the Schwab Center for Financial Research in Denver.
Cisco, which many thought would become the first company to hit $1 trillion in market value, traded at about $68 a share in March 2000. Shares are now at $19. Of course, Cisco (CSCO, Fortune 500) is no longer as viewed as a hot growth stock anymore after a series of disappointing quarterly outlooks.
But some other resurgent techs are also trading at mere fractions of where they were before the bubble burst.
JDS Uniphase shares, which trade at $25.50 now, were at a split-adjusted $1,100 in March 2000. Chip company Broadcom (BRCM, Fortune 500) was a $160 stock 11 years ago. It trades at $42 now. And Alcatel-Lucent (ALU) -- back when it was just Alcatel, before it and Lucent merged in 2006 -- now trades at $5. It used to trade at $45.
"There really are no comparisons now to the tech bubble of 2000. Valuations are more in line with reality," said John Norris, managing director of wealth management with Oakworth Capital Bank in Birmingham, Ala.
Bulls on parade. Is rally getting ridiculous?
Norris said the big difference now is that much of the promise and hype about tech from 2000 has finally translated into real profits, sensible business models and strong balance sheets for the tech giants. Norris owns Apple, Oracle (ORCL, Fortune 500) and Broadcom, for example.
Some high-profile techs are even worth more now than they were in March 2000. Apple, Amazon and eBay (EBAY, Fortune 500) come to mind.
But note the trend there. These companies are all market leaders. The days of also-rans getting bid up to insane heights are hopefully gone for good.

"That was a bubble that we don't want to get back to," Sorensen said. "A lot of the more speculative companies from back then are no longer even around."
Simply put, the big tech companies probably can continue to benefit from explosive growth because tech is so much more ubiquitous in our daily lives than it was even a decade ago.
The Internet in 2000 was still sort of a digital Wild West. Many wondered if people really would feel secure enough to put their credit card information online to purchase things.

Now, people don't blink about blabbing their innermost thoughts to hundreds of friends or followers on Facebook and Twitter. We're nearing a point where using your phone to pay for a Frappucino may become common. Science fiction movies aside, we seem to trust and embrace tech more than we fear it.
"Look at Watson playing Jeopardy!," said Keith Springer, president of Springer Financial Advisors in Sacramento, Calif. "People thought that would have been end of days just a few years ago. Now people were upset when he got a question wrong."
Springer said the tech stock boom makes sense, but he conceded that there's some reason to be nervous about the sector. Private companies are raising what seem to be ungodly sums of money.
It's easier to make the case that Apple should be worth $300 billion than it is to say that Farmvillle creator Zynga is worth $10 billion.
"It definitely seems like an overheated bit of zealousness with some private tech companies. That's a lot like the late 1990s," Springer said.
Sorensen agreed. A new wave of dot-com initial public offerings is in the cards and that could create more bubble comparisons. LinkedIn is barely profitable and Pandora is losing money. Both just filed to go public.
There's a lot of chatter about whether Groupon, which reportedly turned down a $6 billion buyout offer from Google only to then go out and raise, like, $1 billion from private investors, may soon follow suit. And of course, everybody can't wait for Facebook and Twitter to go public.
"There is a disconnect between the valuations for some private and public tech companies. Some of the enthusiasm may be excessive," Sorensen said.
And that poses a potential problem down the road. After all, today's hot VC-backed firms may eventually be the cause of another Nasdaq bubble.
"Some private companies are being ridiculously priced. It does look like people are throwing good money after bad again," Norris said.
Reader comment of the week .. and see you on 2/28! Book stores, sadly are a dying breed. Borders finally couldn't prevent the inevitable and filed for bankruptcy this week. Like many businesses, a refusal to adapt to tech trends until it was too late helped do the company in.

The Nasdaq is currently hovering at about 2,830. That's the highest it's been since November 2007. The tech-heavy index is now just 6% below the key psychological milestone of 3,000. The Nasdaq hasn't traded above that level since December 2000.

How One Teacher's Angry Blog Sparked a Viral Classroom Debate
When high school English teacher Natalie Munroe had a bad day at school, she didn't just vent to her husband: she took it to her blog. Titled "Where are we going, and why are we in this handbasket?" and all but unknown to the world until earlier this month, Munroe's website served as a chronicle of her "utterly loathsome" students. In one post, she advises students to go get jobs with the trash company. In another, she calls them "rude, disengaged, lazy whiners." In yet another she doesn't mince words, proclaiming, "There's no other way to say this: I hate your kid." Now Munroe, who has been temporarily suspended from her position, finds herself in the middle of a swirling online debate — not over what she did, but over what she said about the sometimes harsh realities of the 21st century classroom.
While it's undoubtedly naive to believe in 2011 that a blog will remain anonymous — especially considering Munroe published the online musings using her first name, the initial of her last name and a photo of herself — her attorney, Steve Rovner, says legally she did nothing wrong to warrant suspension. Rovner says his client's school district does not have a policy in place that dictates what teachers can and cannot do online and Munroe did not name the school, nor her students, in her blog posts. Still, while Munroe maintains what she wrote was meant only to serve as amusement for herself, her husband and seven of her friends who read the site, in publishing the rants to a blog — rather than, say, via a mass e-mail to friends and family — she opened herself up to the chance that anyone outside her circle could find the posts. Someone did. Though she never could have predicted the fallout from what she thought were private rants, the full ramifications hit home on Feb. 9 when she was suspended with pay from her job at Central Bucks East High School in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Not long after, her face was plastered on the evening news. "I'm like anyone else in the world — when we encounter frustrations we come home, tell our family and friends about it," Munroe told TIME. "I wasn't fixating on these things, I wrote them down and moved on."
A few days after her suspension, Munroe again logged onto her blog to write a different kind of post, titled "Bloggate- Day 1: The Scandal Begins." (Though she removed all the old posts, this newer post is still available online.) In the post she laments her comments being taken out of context and says the positive things she said about her students in some posts were overlooked. But rather than wishing her plight would quickly fade from the spotlight, Munroe instead welcomed the discussion she thought her comments could spark. "There are serious problems with our education system today," she wrote. "If this 'scandal' opens the door for that conversation, so be it."
By the following week Munroe's story had caught the eye of producers at ABC's Good Morning America. Her appearance on the popular morning show on Wednesday quickly made her the subject of online postings on blogs and across Facebook. One Facebook group, labeled "I support Natalie Munroe," has garnered nearly 3,000 "likes," while an opposing group, called "Throw the Book at Natalie Munroe," has more than 500 "likes." It's within these Facebook groups that the court of public opinion has weighed in on Munroe's situation. Her supporters — many of them teachers — tout the age-old mantra "Kids these days," and cheer Munroe for having the guts to publicly write things about today's "disrespectful" youth that most of them only dare mutter under their breath. One such commenter was Brian Nash, a fifth-grade teacher in West Point, Utah, who has been teaching for nine years. While Nash calls teaching "the absolute greatest job in the world," he says any teacher can relate to having a few students that drive them crazy. "I don't think there is anything wrong with calling kids out — I think they need it," he tells TIME. "There's this mentality that we can't say anything to kids, that we have to baby them, but I'm one of those tough-love kind of people."
But other teachers, like Amy Sterling Casil, an English teacher at a California community college, says that while she cuts K-12 teachers some slack for having to face things she doesn't have to in a college environment, Munroe's remarks were "immature and unprofessional." "It's not like I don't think things like this," she tells TIME. "I have a student right now that I could react that way about, but instead I'm working with that student to get him interested in the class rather than going on the Internet and venting." It seems the contention surrounding Munroe's comments boils down to a fundamental question: Just how much are teachers to blame for the problems plaguing the current education system? Some see in Munroe's comments a systematic rundown of the dire challenges facing America's overburdened teachers. Others see just the kind of attitude problem that can lead students astray. For her part, Munroe thinks teachers get a bad rap. "I don't think people realize how much work goes into being a teacher," Munroe says. "The perception is that everything is the teachers' fault, but teachers can only work within the system that is in place."
While Munroe's suspension is indefinite — in place until the school district decides whether to take her back or terminate her employment — her lawyer says he will likely be filing a lawsuit in the near future. "It's a First Amendment issue," Rovner says. "And it's an unresolved area of the law." And much like the impending legal battle, it's also uncertain as to when the online furor will die down. With an increasing number of national and now international publications picking up her story, it seems Munroe was right when she said the conversation had just begun.
